Understanding your
Guild Insurance policy.

Guild has dedicated the last 60 years to building a network of professionals, providing you with the support you need, so you never have to face challenges alone.

We want to ensure you understand what drives your insurance premiums, the key benefits of your cover, and what you can do to reduce the likelihood and potential cost of a claim.

We're here for the long haul, so you'll never have to train alone.

How does Guild
set your premium?

At its core, insurance is a way of sharing risks among a group of people who face similar risks.

To keep insurance affordable for fitness and active lifestyle professionals like you, we combine the premium paid by everyone in your industry to create a pool of money that is used when anyone needs to make a claim.

Even if you haven't made a claim before, it doesn't mean you won't in the future.

By contributing to the insurance pool, you can train your clients safe in the knowledge you’ll be protected from the financial impact of a covered claim if you have one.

What's causing current premium increases?

You don't have to look far to see the impact of inflation. From protein to petrol, and everything in between, the cost of living is steadily climbing. These upward price pressures have led to an increase in the average cost of claims experienced by fitness professionals. This includes:

  • The cost of managing a claim, including the legal costs incurred to defend and settle a claim
  • The cost of damages paid to injured third parties

Can you reduce your premium?

You might be able to.

The first thing you should do is review your policy details to make sure that the information you have provided us is up to date, and the cover you have selected is right for you. Changing your level of cover may reduce your premium.

Have you obtained AusREP certification in the past 12 months?

Accidents happen…

Unfortunately, even the best trainers can find themselves in regrettable situations.
That's why Guild Insurance is here to make sure you don't have to go it alone.

A client who was performing weighted squats using a Smith Machine (high weight and low reps) was unable to push up on one rep and collapsed under the weight of the bar. As the safety stops weren’t in place, the client fell awkwardly and sustained a back injury.

A client was performing high speed interval sets on a treadmill. They were instructed to take 30 second breaks by jumping off the moving treadmill surface and placing their feet on the side panels.

When doing this, they stumbled, fell off
and sustained a ruptured ACL.

A client was participating in an outdoor group session where they were instructed to run forward carrying a sandbag, then run backward to the starting point. While running backward, they tripped over a sandbag left on the ground by another participant. The client fell to the ground and suffered a fractured elbow.

Using some of our suggested tips and best practice recommendations below may help you avoid situations that could lead to a claim, and ultimately control your premiums.

Communication is key!

Guild’s claims experience shows us that poor communication is a factor in almost all complaints made about our fitness clients. Improved communication will help you build positive relationships with your clients and ensure they understand how to perform the exercises you’re prescribing them.  So, try to focus on not just your technical knowledge, but also how you communicate it.

Choose the exercises you prescribe wisely.

Stories from our claims department show that your clients can suffer severe injuries while exercising. Choosing the right exercise for each individual client can help reduce the likelihood of these injuries. Really consider your client, their fitness goals and current level of fitness and ability and remember, one size does not fit all.

Work within your scope of practice.

Know what you’ve been trained to do and are competent in, as giving advice outside this will potentially be creating a risk for your client and yourself. If the client’s needs or requests are outside your scope of practice, you need to seek assistance or refer the client to someone. Remember that you’re responsible for all professional advice and guidance you provide, regardless of what the client requests.

Keep records of sessions.

It’s important to keep a record of your sessions with clients. Having a record means you don’t have to rely on your memory to recall what took place in each session, and if there’s an allegation made against you, your records will assist in your defence. Your records should detail what exercises your client has performed and the specifics of those exercises in terms of weight, height, sets, repetitions etc.

Balance creativity and risky.

Fitness professionals are continually looking for new and different offerings for their clients to keep things fun and engaging. However, this creativity can be dangerous if the risks of the activity outweigh the likely benefits.  When implementing any new program or exercise, think about what can go wrong before it does, and ensure you put processes in place to minimise those risks.
